History

The origin of the college can be traced back to 1859 when private classes were offered by Henry Stacy in drawing and painting at Oriel Terrace.[2] The was followed by a School of Art which opened in 1865 following public donations.[3] The college's Hans Price Gallery which was used to exhibit work by college students and local artists, was housed in the former School of Science and Art on Lower Church Road, designed by local architect Hans Price.

Campuses

The main college building is situated close to the town centre and beach and forms, along with the now unused Hans Price Gallery, the Knightstone Campus. This was formerly Weston-super-Mare Technical College. Opened in 1970,[4] it is the tallest building in the town with nine operational floors.

The former Broadoak Sixth Form Centre on Loxton Road at the south end of the town was demolished in 2006. The new University Campus opened on the same site in September 2007 to provide sixth form facilities and also be the centre for degree courses. The sixth form is housed in the Jill Dando Centre, named after former Broadoak Sixth Form pupil, Jill Dando.[5]

Alongside this there are two other main sites. The South West Skills Campus and the Business Enterprise Centre both situated close to the town. Weston College also owns The Old Arts College situated next-door to the main Knightstone Campus, which is now called the Hans Price Gallery.[6]

SAIL pupil referral unit

Weston College is home to the SAIL Pupil Referral Unit, which provides secondary education to around 16 year 11 students, aged 15 to 16. These students are still of compulsory education age, but cannot be educated in local schools for reasons such as illness, exclusion, or behavioural problems.[9] The unit has been praised by Ofsted for successfully re-engaging excluded students, and ensuring that virtually all of them move on to college, training or employment when they leave.[9]
